Review: Beastly by Alex Flinn

Beastly

Description

I am a beast.
A beast!
Not quite wolf or bear, gorilla or dog but a horrible new creature who walks upright. I am a monster.
You think I'm talking fairy tales? No way. The place is New York City. The time is now. It's no deformity, no disease. And I'll, stay this way forever ruined unless I can break the spell.
Yes, the spell, the one the witch in my English class cast on me. Why did she turn me into a beast who hides by day and prowls by night? I'll tell you. I'll tell you how I used to be Kyle Kingsbury, the guy you wished you were, with money, perfect looks, and the perfect life. And then, I'll tell you how I became perfectly...beastly

Review

I was one of those people that had not heard of this book until the movie had come out. When I saw the trailer I was fearful to read the book because Beauty and the beast is one of my favorite stories. The book however kept true to the original storyline of this classic, and gave just enough new twist and turns to keep you turning the pages to see what would happen next.

The only thing that saves Kyle from being a the Beast forever is a single act of kindness that he does. (For his future love interest.) Kyle has two years to find someone to love him, or remain the Beast forever. One of my favorite characters in this book is the witch. She plays a part throughout the book and even tries to help Kyle. She understands that he needs someone to teach him to be good, I really enjoyed that the author put that in.

Another thing that I liked was that they kept with the original story line if the father giving the daughter away, and didn’t Disney it up.The only lulls in the book for me were the chat room scenes, when Kyle was talking to others that had been “changed by witches”, and the dialog just annoyed me. Other than that I loved this retelling.
Happy Reading,  Rebecca
